Acrylic poppies 3/29/19

So yesterday I posted this one, watercolor poppies:

Today I got a Sketchbox subscription box in the mail. Sometimes I put these aside for a bit… I almost never use the whole thing at once. All of the art subscription boxes suggest we try to make something using all the supplies. (Always seems like WORK…??) So today I thought, “hey I’ll try using all the supplies!” To be honest, Sketchbox makes it easier, by providing paper (or in this case, a little canvas board) so there’s no excuse not to at least TRY. This month was acrylic paint… yay! So I decided to go ahead and try to redo my poppies in acrylic.

Okay, not as good. But not horrible. A few more intelligently placed layers and I could have something. I do not feel capable of any more intelligently placed layers yet, though. I already cheated a tiny bit by adding some blue paint I had here, because I couldn’t get anything for the background but a muddy mess with the colors they provided. But I’m happy to say I did use ALL the supplies they sent me. Ta-daa!!

Paint Nite! Acrylic flowers

Last night I went to a Paint Night event at a local pizza place, Spaghetti Eddie’s. (First… I hadn’t been there for a while, and may I say the pizza was fabulous. Yum.) We all painted our own version of the same flower under the direction of the event coordinator, Makayla.

Being someone who has trouble coming up with ideas, I’m teaching myself to paint by copying others, and I was surprised by how varied our paintings were. My scope of imagination is narrow when it comes to painting (so far) and it is hard for me to go outside the lines, so to speak. But it wasn’t hard for any of my family! I think these four together on a single wall would make a beautiful grouping!

If you haven’t tried Paint Nite, I recommend it, whether you have ever painted before or not. It isn’t about the finished product, it’s really about enjoying yourself. It’s a fun, relaxing evening.

I decided to hang mine, at least temporarily! I hope they all did. 🙂

Cephalopodic Solar System? (May 31, 2018)

I am in an interesting swap on Swap-bot.com, a very fun artistic swapping site. I’ve made some amazing friends there and met some incredible artists, too. This swap will have 8 parts… each person will decorate 1/8th of every participant’s plain canvas tote bag, one at a time, as they circle the group. Anything goes. It should be an interesting tote bag I receive back! The swap is international, so a little expensive for those of us in the US sending to Europe, but at least the expense of shipping is spread out over a long time.

It turns out, staring at a blank canvas bag which will end up with someone I don’t know is rather daunting!! I don’t want to paint something she hates. I peeked at her profile to get some ideas, and saw “cephalopods” on her list of “likes”… I’m not sure how the planets came into being, I just thought they’d be kinda cool. So I ended up with an octopus either orchestrating, designing, or destroying the universe, depending upon your point of view, and current mood. 🙂 Or really, maybe just playing around with it.

What do you think? I kinda love him. Her? I may need to try a larger paper version to keep. Or several different versions.
