Day 204 (Sun July 23) Mixing markers. And stuff. And what I thought.

Playing around with alcohol markers, watercolor markers (Jane Davenport Mermaid Markers), a Japanese brush pen, and a few Caran d’Ache museum aquarelle watercolor pencils. (I’ve decided these pencils should be in every artist’s toolbox!!!) I really enjoyed mixing all these different tools.

The mermaid markers act like a water brush, but filled with dye-based, water-reactive color. They are very different from a marker, bright and vivid, but require a little practice in handling. Still not sure how I feel about them. Prices are all over the place… I linked the best price I could scrounge on Amazon. Look around before you settle on a price. Once they are empty, I can use them as a water brush or refill with ink, I think.

I have only three Copic markers, and used one, and several less expensive “Illustrator by Spectrum Noir” markers. The crisp edges of the spectrum noir markers themselves, which keep them conveniently from rolling off the table and make them stack nicely, bothered my fingers after a few minutes of coloring, but I liked the way the ink and tip felt. The colors got a bit muddied but they all blended well even without a blending marker and I like the result. I think for my playing around purposes, inexpensive markers may be as good as copics, which I’ve been holding out for, so I think I’ll invest a few dollars in a cheap set. (I found a no-name set of 24 which cost nearly the same as the 3 Copics cost me) The ink of the spectrum noir did feather a bit after laying it down, but it didn’t bother me. In fact, I kind of like it. I think it is a result of more alcohol and less pigment in the cheaper markers. I’d pay extra, maybe, for excellent lightfast ratings, but from what I’ve read, markers are really very lightfast anyway, so that takes that worry off the table.

I added a few details with the museum aquarelles and really liked the way the pencils layered over the inks. You can barely see a little star shape here and there in the sky, but each time I go to make it brighter, I stop myself. They look better in person.

I can’t read the name of the japanese brush pen (It’s written in japanese!) and can’t even remember where I got it 😦 but it is a recent addition, and I really like it.

Day 131 (thurs 5/11) peacock watercolors

All I did was color in my peacock! I started off with watercolor pencils, activated them, and wasn’t satisfied, so then switched to paints. I have a new palette I got for $10 on Amazon which I had previously only seen for much more. I put all my Daniel smith and m graham and Qor colors in, labeled and swatched them, and went to town (so to speak) I’m having trouble with my wordpress account… it won’t let me edit or post from my computer, only my phone! (Anyone else had this problem and figured out a solution????!) so I HOPE I’m providing a link to the palette here, but not really certain. To be honest, I almost didn’t order it because I like my metal palettes so much… but I really REALLY like it!!! And it was less than half the cost I’d ALMOST purchased it at previously. (There’s blue also for ten cents less if you can’t stand pink. I like the pink 🙂 The lid shuts and makes it airtight, and the inside cover has a clear insert, so you can either have three very generous mixing areas, or two, and keep your paint swatch paper beneath it like I’m doing. I don’t like my other plastic palettes because the paint beads up while I try to mix but this surface has been created in such a way that it doesn’t do that!!! It really works very well. If the link didn’t work properly, I will do another post just about the palette.

Mijello fuschia 18 well airtight paint palette

The gold paint I used is from that Gansai Tambi set.. very opaque and very shimmery.

Day 130 (Wed 5/10) pen & ink peacock

This is the type of thing I’ve worked on most frequently the past several years. Kind of zentangle-ish… relaxing.  I plan to try more of these to put in my Etsy store.

I don’t usually add color, unless I’ve drawn it onto a book page, then I generally add some vague color around the edges, but I might give this one a little watercolor later today. I used the Stillman & Birns mixed media book and Staedtler waterproof pens, pictured. (And the Copic for the border, but then changed my mind.)

Day 44: (Monday)a zentangley peacock

I don’t exactly “zentangle“, but I do like to draw these sort of zentangled pictures. We are on a business trip but I won’t let that stall my threesixfive project. (Plus I love my art supplies like they are children. Almost. So brought a bunch with me. A mini travel version of my studio.) I did this project on the plane, on an empty lottery ticket I picked up at Food Lion. I wish I had thought to work the shaded areas into the design. And I thought of a way to work the feathers in better. But I’m needing a pencil on fewer and fewer projects, which feels like improvement.
