5/9/2018: Mothers Day card for story time

Yes, it is Chick-fil-A Virginia Beach Blvd Story Time again! I’ve got two or three adorable books to read, and planning on milk and cookies, like the previous times, and drew this card for the kids to work on. I’m thinking we could use the card on Fathers Day or Grandparents Day, too, if we want to. The kids can color the front,

write their name inside,

and add flower stickers inside the card on the left, or on the envelope (or both)

…plus the child can ‘sticky’ in a coupon for a nice free frosted beverage or iced coffee, for mommy (or whomever they choose to honor this Mothers Day).

This is a prototype… the copies will have no wrinkles or indentations, and come with an envelope. 🙂 Hopefully the kids will have fun! (I did)

Carrot sketch… loosely painted…

Oh my goodness!!! This isn’t as nice as the radishes, and is still overworked… but I think I’m catching on to the idea of loose painting. I’m getting there.

At any rate, this sketch was really FUN, and I have to credit two things for that fun. One is the LazyWonderBrush Youtube channel. Olga’s advice is so helpful. If you have an opportunity, check out a few off her videos. There are a great many artists I follow, and Olga’s style is very relaxing.

The other is this set of QoR Mini watercolors, the new pan set. So amazing. I have liked quite a few of my watercolors very much, for all different reasons, but I’m finding I keep returning to this little set. It is my very favorite right now. I still love my Schmincke and my Daniel Smith paints, (and my EEM handmade paints! love!) but this QoR set are just so VERY FUN to paint with.. I find even if I begin with DS or Schmincke, I end up changing to QoR, or adding them in a bit. (and yes, they do seem to mix fine with the others) I love everything from the QoR signature style tin to the unusual silicone insert and the beautiful selection of colors… I can’t explain it. I just know if they come out with a second mini set, I will find a way to purchase one!

Painting “Loosely” (Radishes)

This idea came from a video from LazyWonderBrush on YouTube. These radishes used Daniel Smith colors, Green Apatite Genuine (one of my favorites… amazing granulation!), Quinacridone red, carbazole violet, and a little Nickel Azo Yellow. All the Amazon links are there… these are basic colors, very useful, so I linked the larger size tubes because they are such a better deal per ounce. (Oh, there was a bit of Sap Green as well… a beautiful ‘convenience’ color)

Those little dots in the leaves come from the genuine green apatite.

May 6, 2018: Tulip sketch (ink)

From the photo I used a week or so ago to do this watercolor sketch:

My more detailed pen sketch, to which I will add color:

(using a Uniball Micro Deluxe .5mm pen… love this pen 🙂 Prices Vary at Amazon, so shop around a bit, but this is currently the best price.

May 2, 2018: Youtube tutorial- beginning watercolor techniques by Makoccino, using QoR mini

Sooo… if you recall, my tape kept tearing my cotton paper. To combat this,  I started reusing it… and apparently I used it once too often, because the paint bled through. Paper didn’t tear, though! 🙂

IMG_0553

Makoccino suggests trying this in a journal ( HERE is the link to the tutorial ) … she says sectioning off the page and trying these three wet on wet ideas will help someone having trouble attacking a whole empty page. (It did) My book is small so these strips are very tiny… maybe an inch wide and 4 inches tall. Mine didn’t come out exactly like hers, but I like them, and I really had fun doing them.

I used my QoR mini watercolor pan set (found here at Amazon) again…. I just love those. Like seriously LOVE. I know they are expensive, but I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

I like this evening sky:

My galaxy stinks. But it was fun:

But this sky is where QoR really shines:

April 29, 2018 Tulips? More QoR and EEM paint play

I saw these beautiful tulips yesterday at a big annual yard sale we attend each year in historic Hilton Village:

And came up with this little sketch based loosely on them:

A few things I don’t like much about this, but I still love the way the QoR paints inspire play, and the lovely granulation coming from the tiny addition of EEM’s ‘Tia’. (See my previous several posts for more about Eventually, Everything Mixes watercolor paints.)

April 27: still playing with EEM paints… more flowers (sort of? It started as flowers)

Today I used a couple of QoR colors with the handmade EEM paints. I love the combination of dispersion and granulation…

IMG_0483

Ohhh, that lovely QoR dispersion… this brown was just the tiniest dot of color added on top of the wet EEM paint, ‘Tia’.

IMG_0485

Look at this intense granulation, from the little dabs of ‘Tia’ dropped in here and there.

Yum.

April 26, 2018: EEM paint again… sunflower?

A quick sketch using the same four “Eventually, Everything Mixes” (EEM) watercolor paints, in my 5″x5″ khadi watercolor journal.

There’s no excuse not to paint everyday, when in five or ten minutes SOMETHING can be done. And every little bit of practice teaches me something.
