Day 284 (Thursday October 12) ink puppy

Ink, ink, and more ink. I discovered sometimes something looks bad simply because it isn’t finished yet. I kept adding layers, and now I love the little guy. Ignore the little bit of eraser on the page. 🙂 I drew this for someone I am very very late in sending something to…. hopefully she will think he is sweet.

Day 210 (Sat July 29) Dogs are difficult!!!

This is my second attempt at my neighbor’s dog… she made me the beautiful pencil holder, remember? And I’m painting her dog in exchange. It is much better than my first attempt, but still looks very little like her, and certainly captures none of her personality. I AM learning things each time, though, so while it frustrates me not to be able to paint what I feel and see, I do see progress with each attempt, and at this point that is more important anyway.

I think it is a decent dog. But a sad Reilly.

I purchased a big sheet of quality 300 pound paper to try for this project, and am using Daniel Smith and Qor paints. And two sable brushes (So my supplies ARE NOT the problem, not even a little) In spite of my disappointment in this attempt, and the exhaustion I feel now, the tools are all a pleasure to work with! And they make me want to try again. Plus, attempt two is so much improved over attempt one, maybe tomorrow I’ll love my result!

My eyeballs are blurring inside my brain, I feel like one may have come lose is swimming around in there, so I’ll come back to this. 🙂

Day 202 (Fri July 21) rainbowy watercolor newfoundland

An artist in Virginia Beach does something similar, although his is a more interesting pattern. Looks like this newfie has been in the Color Run!

I think I may try some more newfie patterns.

Day 176 (sun 6/25) Ruby’s second chance

It’s Ruby’s second chance, she has a brand new family loving her. AND her second chance here in my blog now that I have tried a second drawing… much better job and I’m quite pleased. I don’t want to repost yesterday’s flop (what was I thinking??) but here it is anyway. So you can see why I’m happier today. And why sometimes it is worth doing something more than once.

Best of luck, Ruby!!

Day 174 (Fri 6/23) Nose to Nose

Day 154 (Sat 6/3) an unfinished page of random people sketches

Sometimes even MY life is just to busy to get much done. Still, I’ve stuck to my goal of doing SOMETHING with art every single day this year, so far, and am really seeing progress. Thanks, everyone, for holding me accountable! I’ll add to the page another day.

Day 153 (Fri 6/2) adding watercolor to a sketch

I decided to try a bit of color on yesterday’s sketch, and wanted to try just one color. I was going to go with indigo first, but something about blue faces put me off. So I went with Daniel Smith’s Bloodstone. This is made from a mineral, no other pigments added. I purchased it expecting a deep eggplant-y purple but it’s a neutral shade, on the red or purple end of the spectrum, and lovely for bringing a loud color down just a touch. It also granulates nicely. If you don’t have this color, in my opinion it’s a really nice one to add. Right now I use it more often than any other neutral. The result:

I’m pretty happy with it. And I loved working with layers of just one color.

Day 152 (Thursday 6/1) “pen & ink” sketch

This 2017 project is really improving my sketching abilities!! There’s no way I could have done this a year ago. This, by the way, is from our day in Williamsburg, and is what most of our days out with Emmett look like! He’s a big tourist draw.

Day 151 (Wed 5/31) Trying something a little different, but only slightly

A big full page sketch. Turns out, I like the smaller ones better, and like them not filling the page. But I did enjoy the freedom this extra space gave me while working on the man and the dog. This is my husband, btw, and our Newfie, Emmett, in a pose fairly typical of our life now. I don’t think I quite captured my husband’s angle of lean. 🙂 It was pretty extreme. That’s the Sloober towel hanging out of his pocket. (you’ll have to look sloober up on the other blog, allthecrazyworld.wordpress.com)

Emmett was not being as sad as he appears… just stubborn.
