under-water-color 3/28/2018

Several days ago I posted a watercolor exercise from the youtube channel maremismallart, watercolor staining technique (I think that’s what she calls it. It seems more like a “puddle method” to me) Wet the surface of the paper… apply watercolor, watch it run and creep and puddle. When it is dry, sketch an image into it. I LOVE this method. It is really fun and relaxing, and perfect when I can’t think of something to paint. (Also… it really shows off those creeping tendrilly attributes of my QoR paints.)

So I began with this:

I came up with this:

Big lacy seahorse, coral, seaweed, three little strange looking fish. I also thought about a dragon, and a lady tending flowers… and aliens. What would you have drawn?

mixed media journal page 3/25/18

I have tremendous admiration for the gorgeous mixed media journal pages I see people do, but can’t wrap my head around all the layers and planning and ideas. I stumbled across a tutorial on the youtube channel “maremi small art,” showing her art journal page process start to finish. Marta is so encouraging and easy to follow, and her projects are completed so quickly.

This is a simplified version. Mine doesn’t resemble hers at all, but I got my ideas about where to start from her. I even purchased clear gesso and flexible modeling paste she recommended and used both on this page, learning a little about their properties. It looks so much nicer in person, photography really does it no favors.

More Reflected Trees 3/24/18

When I posted the Reflected Trees I’d done from the tutorial on the youtube channel “maremi smallart,” I rejected my first attempt halfway through. Yesterday I completed it and actually liked it pretty well… so now I know not to throw away attempts I don’t like… I may be able to rework them anyway!

(See? They both look fine)

Watercolor “Stain Doodle Technique” 3/23/18

Another idea from Maremi SmallArt tutorials. (“Watercolor Stain Doodle Beginner’s Technique”.)

Basically… get your paper wet and put little puddles of color wherever you want them, with no plan in mind. Just colors and combinations and shapes you like… after it dries, ink in a little doodle of whatever you imagine it looks like. (I decided this was a GREAT situation for using my QoR paints, with their long tendrilly flow)

This was tricky for me at first. My biggest problem right now is coming up with creative ideas, and all I could see was what Marta had drawn on her paper, which didn’t look like mine at all. After a few minutes, though, after thinking about seaweed or plants in a fish tank… I saw an ant at the bottom, in the middle (???) and then the dandelions were obvious. Β It was a good exercise for me, and I was happy with what I came up with. I’ll do this again, it was fun.

I did add a couple dabs of shadow once I finished. And yes, these ants are darn big. I like them that way πŸ™‚

Reflected Trees (Thurs 3/22/18)

This is from the Youtube channel Maremi SmallArt; the tutorial is called “Reflected Forest For Beginners.” Marta offers cute ideas that are fun and simple, using lots of different media… She says she isn’t a watercolorist, but she is naturally creative and has a good eye, and great suggestions. Mostly she reminds me to try, and to have fun.
