Day 27, 30×30 challenge: Poppies

30 paintings in 30 days… sketches really… but I’m almost finished! I’ve exceeded 30 actual sketches, but haven’t painted every single day, which was my original goal. Still, I feel successful with this challenge. Next month is Watercolor Month so maybe I’ll try it again.

Today I followed Jay Lee painting a poppy.

Here are my three attempts, #1 on the left, #2 top right, #3 bottom right. To be honest, I consider all of these failures, but maybe they are successes in that I took time to paint, and did learn things.

Day 22, 30×30 direct watercolor challenge: Jay Lee hydrangeas

A fun tutorial by Jay Lee (on youtube) These remind me of Iraville’s style (also youtube). This took longer than you’d guess!! Schmincke paint, in my Strathmore 400 series 5×8 watercolor journal. I like this sketch a lot.

Day 17, 30×30 direct watercolor challenge: octopus card and label (posted late)

Most people doing this challenge are doing complete paintings… my goal was just to get into the habit of painting every day, and try new little techniques, and learn about my paints. I made a card and address label to send with a paint sample I’m mailing to someone. EEM watercolor pans (Eventually, Everything Mixes handmade watercolors) Burnt Sienna and Tia.

Day 21, 30×30 direct watercolor challenge: roses

Following a live Jay Lee Youtube demonstration, I came up with these roses today (considerably different, I am afraid, than the lovely blossoms Jay Lee painted!) But I like my version and see where I can improve, too.

Day 20, 30×30 direct watercolor challenge:

Two quick painting lessons from a Jay Lee youtube tutorial:

For the tree leaves, we made foil balls about 2″ in diameter, and brushed paint on them, and dabbed them onto the paper all over the branches. I was supposed to use acrylic paint and dip the foil ball in… next time I may try gouache for this. It was fun… try it!

Day 19, 30×30 direct watercolor challenge: sunflower sketch

I had a swap to send out, “something yellow”… I made this bookmark using washi tape on watercolor paper, and painted the little sunflower on a card… I stayed within the boundaries of the 30 day challenge and did not sketch the flower out first.

Day 18, 30×30 watercolor challenge: pretty grasses (jay lee tutorial)

Check out Jay Lee’s watercolor channel… there are some really nice tutorials there. Today I stumbled accidentally upon a live demo, very simple to follow along.

I used schmincke pan watercolors in a strathmore 400 series 140 lb journal.
