Day 111 (Fri April 21) watercolor clematis vine

Based on a photo I took in the backyard. Using daniel smith paints in my strathmore 400 series watercolor journal (love this little book so much more than I expected to!) with my faithful uniball deluxe micro pen. I don’t love the overall composition as much as I’d hoped, but I like the individual elements… I like the flowers quite well, the brick, and really like the way the fence came out (which I learned from a previous tutorial!)

I love my daniel smith watercolors, (this sap green being particularly useful today!) BUT, it turns out I don’t love using them wet, from the tubes. I’ve purchased this Meeden metal palette for $13.00 (!!!!!) which I ADORE. And $13 is a steal… includes 24 half pans or 12 full (sized) pans!! I filled the 12 full pans with my daniel smith paints, and let them dry for a couple days, and I just love love love it. It even fits my favorite paint brushes. The only thing… I wish I’d gotten the larger pan! I don’t NEED more colors. But I know I’m getting more. So for a few more dollars I may get the larger one (24 full pans) soon. Heck, I’ll use both, probably. I know I sound like a commercial. I looked hard for a metal palette. I suppose the $60 ones are nicer. But I like this one SO MUCH, I don’t see how I’d care to have the costlier one. Let me know if you try one, or if you have one you like better!

Day 108 (Tues April 18) Easter sketch

My very own art!! No tutorial. Ellis on an Easter egg hunt. Here, her poor little face got messed up when I inked it. But I figured it out later. There were several things I learned from this one that I’ll do differently next time, so it was a good project!

Day 92 (Sun April 2) cable car/train

Trying a sketch of my own of a photo my husband suggested I try. Practicing perspective, and what things to leave out. Also, I think I want the darks darker and the lights lighter next time. I was afraid of making it muddy, instead I made it bland. I’m learning!

I will have to eat my words regarding waiting to get sable paintbrushes, because my husband surprised me with a sable detail brush this week!

It’s really nice and now I want more More MORE. I definitely need a #6 or 8. And a #12. And a 1/2 inch flat. And a travel brush. And… some others. Poor Mark. He was being so sweet. 🙂

Seriously, though, it really does just feel NICE. But I still think you can find good quality cheap brushes to start with. 🙂

Day 80: (Tues 3/21) watercolor sketches

Two more Sheeler tutorials. Testing craftamo brushes.

Strathmore 400 5.5×8 watercolor journal, M Graham paints ultramarine, hansa yellow, Daniel Smith Sepia.

I like them both. But…I love this one….

Day 77: (sat 3/18) watercolor line drawing using two colors

Another of Peter Sheeler’s sketches. Too often I overwork parts. I like these studies with only two or three colors. I’m hoping to fill my sketchbook quickly because I’ve already found the next book I want to try! Art is all about shopping for me, apparently.

Day 74: (wed 3/15) bluebonnets requested.

A quick sketch copied from R A Hayes. Very cute. My flowers are too short and squatty. Wimpy really. Petals too small, too spaced, etc.  But I like the idea. And i like the way of doing the jar.

Day 72:(mon 3/13) watercolor, pen and ink sketch

Followed a Sheeler tutorial called “pen and ink sketching on painted paper adding white highlights.” Which pretty much says it all. I painted the paper, I drew the sketch, I added white ink highlights. It DOESN’T say, however, that I had my day numbers all messed up all week! So had to go back and adjust them all. (Had you noticed?)

Day 60: (wed 3/1) watercolor splattering wash background

I saw this technique in a youtube video… you splatter color onto a dry page, then use a wet brush to push it around into a light loose wash. Once fully dry, you do an ink line drawing on top and shade with more color. The result can be much more interesting than a line drawing and watercolor on a white page. This isn’t a great representation, but I made several backgrounds and then tried a quick sketch. I’ll try more of these on my other backgrounds.

Day 49: (Sat.) baby shower card, watercolor

A quick watercolor sketch. img_4089NOT my original idea… I saw a similar card in the store and thought a little watercolor painting might be more special. (Plus I needed an ‘S’ anyway, since it is TWINS: friends, not friend!) Hoping the mommy liked it.
