Tulips! With the help of Angela Fehr… 2/28/19

Angela Fehr has been offering a free livestream “beginning watercolor bootcamp” this week, February 27, 28, and March 1st, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (tomorrow). It isn’t much hands on, but she shares a lot of good information. You can find the recorded sessions still on youtube, I think.

Wednesday we made a background.

(Arches cotton watercolor pad, 140 lb, cold pressed… DaVinci paints… except the blue, which is EEM, DaVinci Casaneo brush, size 2)

(PS, these brushes are new… reviewed on youtube by Teoh Yi Chie, a popular urban artist I follow. These are synthetic round quill brushes, but you’d never guess they aren’t animal hair. They are excellent brushes, so far. They hold so much water, as much as animal hair, and keep a beautiful point, but are large enough to do a lot with. I ordered the size 2 and size 0… the 2 is about like a round 8, I’d guess. I’ve linked them on Amazon, and I get a few cents on purchases, but they keep the price the same for you. I haven’t looked anywhere but Amazon, though (I bought through Teoh’s link!) so you might want to shop around a bit and see if there’s a better price somewhere)

Today Angela added a tulip blossom and gave some suggestions about technique… but kind of left us hanging with the rest of it. (What??? I have to paint on my own?? 🙂

I let it dry, then came back to a bunch of water spots I hadn’t noticed, in the top left corner, so I added some splashes of color. Maybe not an improvement, and not perfect, but I like it. Painting loosely is a real challenge for me.

I’m considering taking her 6 week watercolor mastery course. (This is kind of a teaser for that one) If I do, you’ll be able to follow along with my progress, and see if it’s something that might interest you next time she offers it!

I purchased this 4×6 Pentalic Accordion Fold Dream Catcher Watercolor sketch book January 6th, for $7.99. I was afraid to start it! I’d seen a youtube artist, Drawing Wiff Waffles, do a very cute scene in it, and just couldn’t think how to use it. In the end, it fit PERFECTLY inside the tiny zipper bag I wanted to take for my art supplies on my trip to California recently. AND, it had exactly the right number of double pages, using both front and back, for a title page, and one double page per day! (I included the Amazon link for the book, but there’s also a drawing book instead of watercolor book, if you prefer. The regular pentalic watercolor journals are very nice, too!)

It was Fabulous using it. I loved it!! I could bleed my design over a bit to the next page if I wanted to, but I didn’t have to. It was inexpensive enough I didn’t stress too much (as you’ll see from my entries!!) and the small pages meant I could capture something, but didn’t have to spend much time on anything. (well, some of it I finished at home, anyway)

IMG_7001

I didn’t get a shot of the edge, but very thin… maybe 1/4 inch thick?

IMG_6995

How cute is that??

IMG_6998

Title page: That’s supposed to be a sunset, shaped like mickey’s iconic ears… the top ones got a little solar-system-ish.

IMG_7007

My favorite two pictures were done on the plane… a “selfie” of me and Mark in our seats on the plane, and a picture of the fruit and cheese tray we bought in flight. (actually really delicious!)

IMG_7008

We went on business, so I tried some random seminar-people-shots…

IMG_7009

More random folks walking to a big meeting (7000 people! You’d think I could have drawn more people in that group…) and a random hotel plant. I later met two of the people walking 4 in a line… the two on the left had such great outfits on! A lot of personality. Not that the two on the right DIDN’T… but I felt like I was meeting celebrities when I met the two on the left, and wanted to tell them I’d drawn them! But, then it occurred to me, that may not make a great first impression. My husband already knew them, so maybe it is less creepy than it seems??

IMG_7010

Wednesday morning brought the final seminar meetings, from afternoon on we were on our own. Disneyland! It rained, but just enough to keep (normal) people away. And we saw Minnie. (Also, my favorite new shoes)

IMG_7002

Using Uber for the first time was a big deal! It was supposed to rain all day, and did a bit in the middle, so we went to a very cool little area of town for lunch (super cool, and yet I drew an uber map instead???) and went to a movie. It was Valentines Day! We also got a heart shaped Shakeys pizza delivered. I was SOOOO excited, because I loved Shakeys as a kid and literally can still taste it. Sadly… it is not the same recipe. Not bad, but different 😦 The salad was excellent, though!

IMG_7003

Friday at Disneyland’s California Adventure. VERY fun park. Small. Prone to crowding. Great. (Rained a bit) I bought some pins.

IMG_7004

Saturday, no rain. Sun, sun, sun! Oh, and guess what we hadn’t realized??? A holiday weekend. Yeah. So really absolutely miserable at Disneyland. I’m glad we went a bit Wednesday night. Captured some Disney princess hands at the big parade… (the ladies were prettier than this, sorry ladies.)

IMG_7005

Saturday night’s dinner made it onto this page, and not much more.

IMG_7006

(Also… when did a flight from west coast to east coast become three hours long???? That’s crazy! And awesome.)

I apologize for waiting so long to post this. Honestly, it wasn’t as gorgeous as I’d imagined it, and so I put it off!! Put it is great fun to look at. Maybe I’ll do another for some of the memories I didn’t include! I highly recommend this for a short trip or a themed book. Low commitment and lots of fun to use.

If you follow the link I made at the top, I do get a few cents on each purchase made, but Amazon doesn’t charge any more. If you find it cheaper somewhere else, link it below for us! What would you use this accordion journal for?

A vibrant watercolor triad

DS Phthalo green (PG7)

DS Quinacridone lilac (PR122)

QoR Green Gold (PY129) (this should be DS rich green gold, but I don’t have that)

Even my trash is pretty with this bright triad of colors:

IMG_6149

I mentioned this group of colors in a previous post, and am still astounded by it. None of these are on my “every day” palette (or, any of my palettes) But I will be playing around with them a bit more, and seeing if I come up with other groups I love.  I’ve included the pigment numbers, because you don’t have to use these brands. You may have this triad in your arsenal already!

IMG_6145

Look at these colors!!!!

Does this bright vivid palette amaze you, like it does me? Let us know in the comments. Do you have another triad you love, that you’d like me to try out?

Thursday 2/7/19 Pentel Pigment ink brush pen

I love the pentel pocket brush pen SO MUCH, but “meow meow kapow” on youtube tested this pen and liked it a little better than the pocket pen, so I’m going to try it out. Both are real brush pens, with waterproof ink. I think this one is disposable, and the pocket pen has cartridges. This one is longer, too (if length matters as far as travel or storage)

IMG_6184

IMG_6181

I love drawing my supplies SO MUCH. I wonder how weird that is? Like, scale of one to ten. Not THAT weird, right? Like maybe just a 2 or 3? Let me know what you like to draw. (Or if you have tried either of these pens… is there a waterproof brush pen you like?)

I used davinci watercolors, but mixed a little white gouache in for the gray.

Pentel Pigment Ink Brush Pen, extra fine, on Amazon here $6.50 right now… I am an Amazon Associate, and a Prime member, and I do most of my shopping on Amazon… I do get a few cents back if you order through a link here, but you still pay the same price… I always suggest you check around (but usually I find my best prices on Amazon). I will always tell you if I’ve found something less expensive elsewhere!

Meow meow kapow’s brush pen comparison (there are two parts)

Tuesday 2/5/19 mini Pentel water brush

Yes! Finally some water brushes I can use. Sort of. Well, not really… I still have a LOT of trouble controlling the flow of water. Give me a sable brush ANY day.

IMG_6084

But I recognize that water brushes can be extremely convenient when you don’t want to use cups of water, for example in an airplane, a deli, on location really anywhere. Or even in your own studio. Sometimes it is just simpler not to use a cup of water. Honestly… sometimes I am too darn lazy to go find clean water. A filled water brush makes me happy then. I follow several artists on youtube who swear by them. These Pentel brushes are easier to use than some I’ve tried in the past. Or really, maybe they just seem easier to me because “Meow Meow Kapow” on youtube told me they were.  It’s hard to be sure. But I do like them and am having fun playing.  I’ll see if I can get the hang of them over the next few days.

IMG_6085

I used only the mini brush today, but I got a set of 4, with three larger brushes in a fine, medium, and large tip. The fine looks particularly intriguing to me.

Here is the set of 4 pentel water brushes on Amazon, currently $14.99, and here is the single mini brush,  for $3.38, if you just want the tiniest one. It is 5 inches long, and does NOT get smaller, the way it is, although I know one person who cut the lid to make it fit into her travel set. It is the second smallest water brush I have. (My smallest is 3 1/2 inches long, found here on Amazon in a set with a cute little extra water reservoir… it works pretty well, too, as far as my limited experience with water brushes tells me, although isn’t as fine a tip) If you like water brushes you might like these, but the jury is still out as far as I’m concerned. I’m going to try them and I’ll let you know what I think in a future blog if I end up loving them.

Friday 2/1/19 Urban Sketching: The Blue Star Diner

I met a couple members of the Hampton Roads Urban Sketchers in the parking lot of The Blue Diner, in Newport News, Virginia. The diner’s claim to (historic) fame is that it is one of the last remaining diners built in a factory. (?) Apparently, also, it was moved from Woodstock to Newport News in 1963.

IMG_5997

I know my husband’s family has many fond memories of eating there decades ago, with their grandparents. (They lived just behind it, in historic Hilton Village.) In July of 2015, the city decided to demolish the diner, but then plans were brought forward to renovate the kitchen, and that renovation was supposed to take place in 2017. There were lights on inside the building while we were there, but the place definitely feels deserted, and looks run down… the no trespassing and no parking signs completed the feeling. It’s really a piece of Hilton Village, a place I love, and I hope it does get renovated and opened again soon. If it does, you’ll find me there!

I’m the worst at seeing what to leave out, and it shows here.

IMG_5998

The sign was incredible and I wanted to include it even if it was in a different place on the page. If they ever do reopen, I hope they fix the sign but don’t change it.

I used EEM paints, for the most part, with one Daniel Smith exception, in my Moleskine watercolor journal. (not my favorite paper, although the book is very well made… don’t get one.) I also had a chance to use my Etchr Slate Mini art travel bag. It works like an easel for field sketching, as well as holding the supplies. If you haven’t taken a look, do check them out! It isn’t a cheap bag, but is a really nice tool.

(We went to Indulge Bakery in Hilton Village for lunch… the cake wasn’t lunch. Exactly. But yummy, after the chicken salad croissant, which was also yummy. I haven’t finished this page, but thought I’d better include it now anyway.)

Thursday 1/31/19: EEM watercolor

I know technically today is Friday… I’m just a day behind posting. This is Thursday’s journal page. No, this does not have ANYTHING to do with my day. I couldn’t think of anything I wanted to paint, but then I thought… I’ll just play!

I used EEM handmade watercolors (Eventually, Everything Mixes)… go check out her site! You’ll have to watch for watercolors for sale, and grab them quickly when you find new colors. I really like them. They rewet easily, have little (to no?) color shift… and they smell nice!
