Thirty Days of Everyday Life, Day THIRTY!!!

Kinda’ going out on a whimper here. But can you believe it’s been 30 days already!? And I DID it.

Shopping for vacation Santa’s photo area at Saturday’s Christmas in July event:

So. I still can’t paint a black dog. In fact, my earlier attempts may have been better. I’m UNlearning. 😦

Not a great layout. Gorgeous weather, though, that’s something! 🙂

(PS Affiliate link included here: Clara’s new doggy pool is awesome!! (linked here on Amazon) It was $65 for the xxl (63″ across) and I hesitated before spending that much, but it has very good reviews and the cutest joyful doggy photos and videos. There are a lot of sizes, the smallest is under $30. The sides are sturdy and I wouldn’t hesitate recommending it for both dogs and children. Easy set up, easy storage. Best little storable pool I’ve even purchased like this. I feel like the plastic is strong enough to last a long time, and it accordion folds to store. AND it stays up without water, so even with just an inch or two in there now, it is open fine!)

Back to my art journal experience: I’m glad I challenged myself. I’m going to try to art journal my way through August as well, although I may allow myself to miss some days. Thirty days without a break was a bigger challenge than I expected.

Several advantages, though:

It is GOOD to make myself stick to something thirty days straight even if I don’t feel like it.

I’m more comfortable/familiar with my current paint set now.

I’m more comfortable/familiar with my pens now.

I have this cool diary to refer back to in later years. (I’m not sure art journaling my life every single day is wise… I’ll never look back at all that! )

A lot of practice at general sketching/painting.

Re-developing the habit of everyday art.

Really the only disadvantages:

It was hard to do EVERY day without fail, and took more time than I expected.

Sometimes my day was super boring (online paperwork etc all day) and I didn’t know what to draw. (maybe an advantage, too, sometimes, since I might have to draw something I’m less comfortable with)

Thanks for listening!! I may do a journal overview and supply list later!

Thirty Days of Everyday Life, Day 12: a morning swim

IMG_1007

As you are probably aware, my husband and I are owned by two newfoundland dogs… this morning when the dogs woke us up (as early as every other day), instead of an early morning walk, we took them out to the beach for a quick swim. (and a good rinse off at home after)

(That’s my attempt at Emmett swimming.) Emmett loved it, Clara tolerated it and DIDN’T SINK, which is a pretty good end result. And the rest of the day we mostly just goofed off. In fact, in the evening we were going to go out but some strong storms rolled through and we decided to chill with Emmett, because he’s afraid of thunder. I guess what I should have sketched was Emmett in his thunder shirt!

Newfies and cherry blossom days

Emmett (white chest, cherry blossoms sticking to his drool) and Clara, our newfies, under our beautiful cherry trees. She looks smaller here but isn’t really, not much. I love the cherry-blossom-snow-days best of all days in our yard, I think. And they are so few!

Emmett in back, Clara up front, playing in the cherry blossoms. I know this isn’t art related. I do plan to sketch some blossoms, though! IMG_7939

A lot of sloober, yes, but how can anyone resist those faces? (Okay, anyone without a newfie may not appreciate them. They are a mess here)

Sunday and Monday’s journal: how do you paint a black dog?

Sunday we went to Colonial Williamsburg for a short time, and I thought the entrance to this basement bookstore would be fun to try. I love Mermaid Books… it is nicely crammed with lots of “vintage” books. (My favorite kind!) And, it is hidden away in a basement!

Today I went in to work for some interviews, and paperwork I had to get done. That didn’t sound fun to draw, so I drew Clara, my one year old newfoundland “puppy”. (At 120 pounds, it’s hard to think of her as a puppy!) She is solid black and in photos is often just a black blob with pretty eyes.

(How do YOU do black animals? Any tips to share?)

Day 154 (Sat 6/3) an unfinished page of random people sketches

Sometimes even MY life is just to busy to get much done. Still, I’ve stuck to my goal of doing SOMETHING with art every single day this year, so far, and am really seeing progress. Thanks, everyone, for holding me accountable! I’ll add to the page another day.

Day 153 (Fri 6/2) adding watercolor to a sketch

I decided to try a bit of color on yesterday’s sketch, and wanted to try just one color. I was going to go with indigo first, but something about blue faces put me off. So I went with Daniel Smith’s Bloodstone. This is made from a mineral, no other pigments added. I purchased it expecting a deep eggplant-y purple but it’s a neutral shade, on the red or purple end of the spectrum, and lovely for bringing a loud color down just a touch. It also granulates nicely. If you don’t have this color, in my opinion it’s a really nice one to add. Right now I use it more often than any other neutral. The result:

I’m pretty happy with it. And I loved working with layers of just one color.

Day 152 (Thursday 6/1) “pen & ink” sketch

This 2017 project is really improving my sketching abilities!! There’s no way I could have done this a year ago. This, by the way, is from our day in Williamsburg, and is what most of our days out with Emmett look like! He’s a big tourist draw.

Day 151 (Wed 5/31) Trying something a little different, but only slightly

A big full page sketch. Turns out, I like the smaller ones better, and like them not filling the page. But I did enjoy the freedom this extra space gave me while working on the man and the dog. This is my husband, btw, and our Newfie, Emmett, in a pose fairly typical of our life now. I don’t think I quite captured my husband’s angle of lean. 🙂 It was pretty extreme. That’s the Sloober towel hanging out of his pocket. (you’ll have to look sloober up on the other blog, allthecrazyworld.wordpress.com)

Emmett was not being as sad as he appears… just stubborn.
