Peter Sheeler clouds tutorial. It’s a new Pentalic watercolor book which I’ll discuss more another day, and Daniel Smith paints.
Day 179 (Wed 6/28)
A 365 day art project… one drawing a day
I like the boldness of my first attempt better but some points of execution in this second much better. The dude, her hair. I chose a muted palette for the dreariness but prefer bold color I think. Working with the Daniel Smith paints (relying heavily upon Bloodstone, a new favorite neutral of mine) was a pleasure, as always. I may brighten the colors, I think, later.
It’s Ruby’s second chance, she has a brand new family loving her. AND her second chance here in my blog now that I have tried a second drawing… much better job and I’m quite pleased. I don’t want to repost yesterday’s flop (what was I thinking??) but here it is anyway. So you can see why I’m happier today. And why sometimes it is worth doing something more than once.
Best of luck, Ruby!!

In my last “Artsnacks” package I received two Art Crayons… watercolor crayons!! They are fat and difficult to use for detail, but are also really creamy and fun. Once applied, they don’t smear or feel chalky or waxy, but water can be added for interesting effects. I think these could be really fun on a mixed media journal page.
Here I used watercolor crayons to fill out the background and hair, dipping a wet brush in the crayon to pick up enough to add shading and definition to the face, and highlighted with silver sharpie marker and white gel pen.

Fun and fast for cartooning, too. 🙂 I guess I need a few more colors.

Tomorrow I’ll sketch the same face in pencil.
All I’ve done is add a little color to yesterday’s sketch.
The good news: I tried this Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor sketchers box, and love it!
Which I found at Amazon for $12.93, an amazing deal, and I am really pleased with it. I really dislike my original W & N set, and I kept reading about how everyone loved them, even the Cotman student line, so I thought, when I saw this deal, I’d try them one more time. And I’m really glad I did. If you are looking for a very inexpensive start to watercolor, or a nice little travel box cheap, this one is for you. The box is nothing special, but adequate, the assortment of colors is really good, with two good yellows, two good reds, two good blues, two good greens, as well as yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, and (wasted on me) white… really great choices… and it comes with a beautiful tiny travel brush that is nearly worth the cost of the whole set. Now that I have tried it, I highly recommend it, and think this will be my go-to pan set for travel, even though I have worked so hard to set up different travel tins.
Seriously. Under $13 and free shipping, if you have Amazon Prime. I haven’t seen a price like this anywhere. (*I just looked to see how much without a Prime membership, and there’s another seller listing it for $12.77 with free shipping right now… I wish I needed more of these!!) Many of these are “hues”, which bothers some artists, but they have good lightfast ratings and vibrant colors. I’m really happy with them.

A big full page sketch. Turns out, I like the smaller ones better, and like them not filling the page. But I did enjoy the freedom this extra space gave me while working on the man and the dog. This is my husband, btw, and our Newfie, Emmett, in a pose fairly typical of our life now. I don’t think I quite captured my husband’s angle of lean. 🙂 It was pretty extreme. That’s the Sloober towel hanging out of his pocket. (you’ll have to look sloober up on the other blog, allthecrazyworld.wordpress.com)
Emmett was not being as sad as he appears… just stubborn.
I loved their arm-in-armness. These sweet little girls were walking through colonial Williamsburg while we were there Sunday, and I couldn’t help using them in my studies. I caught them just as the littlest twisted around to looked back for her parents.
Done in a VERY small Stillman and Birns watercolor sketchbook with daniel smith watercolor paints. And my favorite uniball deluxe .5 pen.

The beautiful old house at the Hampton Roads Winery in Surry. (Technically: Elberon) If you live in Hampton Roads and haven’t been here, it’s a nice, relaxing day. With wine. And goats. Canson mixed media rough 7×10 tablet, daniel smith watercolors, uniball deluxe micro .5 pen.
