Sunday/Monday, January 7th and 8th, 2019

We spent Sunday putting away Christmas decorations… and pared down our collections a LITTLE. Then we took the dogs to Williamsburg for a walk (uh… after bathing Clara, who dipped half her furry body into a HUGE deep mud puddle of her own creation. A newfie bath is not a small challenge) We had trouble in W-burg finding a place to seat us outside. This was odd because it was warm, like 65 degrees, and several restaurants offer seating for people with their dogs. But the crazy restrictions they were suddenly presenting us with!! We ended up frustrated, and just having pizza at home.

Not much of a sketch, but that’s about all I could handle by pm.

Monday’s most important activity didn’t get recorded in pictures… Emmett and Clara were groomed!! (this doesn’t sound like such a big deal… but last time I took Clara she bulldogged on us and they called me back after 30 minutes to come get her. Bulldogging is our term for when our humongous fur babies decide not to move. What are we gonna do, pick them up? We CAN’T physically do that. So mostly if they decide not to move, they don’t move. (Mark can always get them to move, but I’m sometimes at a loss, and I can’t blame the tiny girls at the doggy place) They also passed their assessments and could then play with all the other dogs for a few hours in group play. They suffered through the grooming and came home happy, clean, and tired. Clara was already missing one new hair bow when we arrived to pick her up. THAT’S what I should have drawn.

But I didn’t. Monday’s sketch is of the video I watched on youtube on Dr Oto Kano’s channel, comparing 11 different ultramarine watercolors. She always presents some well researched ideas. I really enjoy what I learn from her, and if you are interested in technical aspects of watercolors, beyond “how to paint” videos, you should check out her channel. I’d like one day to have a youtube channel myself! If I ever come up with anything unique to express.

(Almost) a week of drawing my days…

Yeah, that’s me, kinda, because for some reason I didn’t draw on Wednesday, then by Friday couldn’t remember doing ANYTHING. I think maybe we went for a movie?? :

(working in a Stillman & Birn Beta Softcover Sketchbook, Heavyweight 180lb, Cold-Press, White, 28 Sheets – 5.5×8.5

I’m very pleased with this book. The pages lay flat when the book is open, and they don’t curl a lot. The paint dries very quickly on them, though. They aren’t 100% cotton. But works well for this project.

Using a variety of watercolors… a combination of Daniel Smith, Schmincke, M Graham, EEM, Holbein, and QoR.

And my favorite brushes, Winsor & newton Series 7 kolinsky sable. sizes 6 and 4. These really are AMAZING brushes. I have lots of less expensive brushes which I never use. I can only find a small one OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive on Amazon, so I’m not linking it. Wait for sale prices at Jerry’s, Jacksons, Cheap Joes, Wet Paint, etc! )

Day 153 (Fri 6/2) adding watercolor to a sketch

I decided to try a bit of color on yesterday’s sketch, and wanted to try just one color. I was going to go with indigo first, but something about blue faces put me off. So I went with Daniel Smith’s Bloodstone. This is made from a mineral, no other pigments added. I purchased it expecting a deep eggplant-y purple but it’s a neutral shade, on the red or purple end of the spectrum, and lovely for bringing a loud color down just a touch. It also granulates nicely. If you don’t have this color, in my opinion it’s a really nice one to add. Right now I use it more often than any other neutral. The result:

I’m pretty happy with it. And I loved working with layers of just one color.

Day 152 (Thursday 6/1) “pen & ink” sketch

This 2017 project is really improving my sketching abilities!! There’s no way I could have done this a year ago. This, by the way, is from our day in Williamsburg, and is what most of our days out with Emmett look like! He’s a big tourist draw.

Day 151 (Wed 5/31) Trying something a little different, but only slightly

A big full page sketch. Turns out, I like the smaller ones better, and like them not filling the page. But I did enjoy the freedom this extra space gave me while working on the man and the dog. This is my husband, btw, and our Newfie, Emmett, in a pose fairly typical of our life now. I don’t think I quite captured my husband’s angle of lean. 🙂 It was pretty extreme. That’s the Sloober towel hanging out of his pocket. (you’ll have to look sloober up on the other blog, allthecrazyworld.wordpress.com)

Emmett was not being as sad as he appears… just stubborn.

Day 150 (Tues 5/30) such a cute group of tourists

I loved their arm-in-armness. These sweet little girls were walking through colonial Williamsburg while we were there Sunday, and I couldn’t help using them in my studies. I caught them just as the littlest twisted around to looked back for her parents.

Done in a VERY small Stillman and Birns watercolor sketchbook with daniel smith watercolor paints. And my favorite uniball deluxe .5 pen.

Day 124: Thurs 5/4 Williamsburg VA

We’ve walked Duke of Gloucester Street many times, but I haven’t noticed this teensy house in the middle of these larger two before. (yes, it’s really that little, too!)

Supplies: Uniball micro deluxe pen, Sennelier watercolor, Stillman and Birns Beta Series Mixed Media Journal… 5.5″x3.5″.

This is my newest (very tiny!) journal. I wanted to try something small to fit inside my smallest bag when I got out. A youtube artist I follow and respect said how much he loved this brand, so I wanted to try one, but I really wanted to feel the paper myself first, since it’s “mixed media” instead of “watercolor”… I found mine  (accidentally) at Hobby Lobby. I’ll link it on Amazon for you (I paid slightly more for mine at Hobby Lobby, but just a few cents)
