April 29, 2018 Tulips? More QoR and EEM paint play

I saw these beautiful tulips yesterday at a big annual yard sale we attend each year in historic Hilton Village:

And came up with this little sketch based loosely on them:

A few things I don’t like much about this, but I still love the way the QoR paints inspire play, and the lovely granulation coming from the tiny addition of EEM’s ‘Tia’. (See my previous several posts for more about Eventually, Everything Mixes watercolor paints.)

I think I like QoR better for the leaves, because of the way the paints spread and flow. But the daniel smith blue (cerulean blue chromium) and green (green apatite genuine) granulate so prettily on this picture. Really nobody has such beautiful and interesting granulating colors as DS. (I tried to make a taped off border, which worked except the tape tore the page. I even rubbed it on my jeans first so it wouldn’t be so sticky.)

This is for my granddaughter, by request.

Sat 3/3/2018 Schmincke Watercolor

My most favorite set of paints! So far…

It fits on my outstretched hand, and slips perfectly into the front pocket of the small bag I use for my travel art kit. And, ooooh, the colors.

The travel paint brush is a “Joe Miller” Signature Series #6, from Cheap Joes, and fits right inside. I’ve only used it three times but like it very much, so far. And it was affordable!

The paints were not, particularly, but they WERE on sale, so that’s something. 🙂

Sunday Jan 21, 2018 inky bird

I’m still adding to that pen and ink series all on one page. After I took this photo I corrected some little places, but didn’t take another picture.

This sketch actually came from one I started in a journal last night while waiting for our takeout order to be ready. There’s something pleasant about drawing birds and flowers. I’ll keep adding to this page and post the whole thing soon, as well as that original sketch.

Supplies, and Amazon links: Canson 140 lb watercolor paper, 9×12, cold pressed, not my favorite brand but actually great for this project, using ink, where I want some texture, and where I may add a light wash of paint. A pretty good deal here I think at under $10 for 30 sheets…. drawn with a uniball deluxe micro pen, .5 mm tip… . My favorite pen. It’s waterproof, in case I do choose to wash some color over it. I’ve linked the 12 pack here, because at $24, it’s such a better deal than the individual pen I could fine for $8. (???!!!)But wait until there’s a good price on a 3 pack if you aren’t sure about them.  I have found a three pack for $9 before, but right now that is $12. Prices fluctuate on Amazon. The 12 pack micro tip seems to stay close to $2 a pen.

Uni-ball also offers this pen in a fine tip instead of micro, .7mm, for $12.95 a dozen.

(As an Amazon Affiliate I do get a few cents back on any sale made through these links, but I only offer items I think you may be interested in if you are reading this blog, at prices I think are reasonable.) I’m going to order these 7mm pens myself because it’s the same quality ink at a great price, and let you know what I think of them for larger pieces, but I do love the smaller 5mm micro tip!

Day 301 (Sun Oct 29th) -I’m back!

WELL… I haven’t posted since day 291… although I have made a sketch or two since then, nothing worth noting. I tried a couple Peter Sheeler tutorials one evening, and simply didn’t have a moment after that. We have been massively overwhelmed with our restaurant opening. I thought I’d manage to sneak 5 minutes of art in each day, but I had no idea how exhausted I’d be or how many 18 hour days I’d be trying. I feel like, artistically speaking, October has just been wasted. But we worked hard and the restaurant is on its way now, fully born, and I will have a little of my time back.

But when I picked up a pen today I found myself without inspiration. Or even the desire to sketch. It was a weird feeling. My studio is a wreck, as I have just tossed things in there and shut the door, so I couldn’t even go in there to sit. I watched a few a few artsy videos from vloggers I follow, and tried something quick…. really I think I’m still just sleepy. So here is my sad attempt at day 301 which really ISN’T day 301 of drawing… but is day 301 of the challenge.  And hopefully over the next week something will inspire me.
